When writing in Dutch but using a foreign coin like $, we also write the sign at the end.

So in Dutch we write 100€ but also 100$.

But that's just wrong.

And it's also wrong for me to refer to the date as 13/05/2025, by that logic, because in USA! USA! USA! it's 05/13/25 and therefore that's the only way anyone can be allowed to write the date.

No, that's different, just like the different decimal delimiters used ("." in the US, "," in Yurp and elsewhere). Those fall under the heading of Culturally Differentiated Nomenclature (my term).

But the dollar sign preceding the amount is the well-known standard for that designation.

Writing 100$ is just as wrong as writing °20C. It's the wrong order of symbols.

They also write decimal with a comma, 10,001 is 10.001 not ten thousand one.  :-//

Another place writes numbers like this... 12,34,56,789.0

What place is that? Never seen that.

A very large country, that doesn't have "millions" but does have lakh and crore.

The nice thing with dates and times is that there are so many standard formats to choose from. Start with ISO8601 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_8601

But it's exactly the same thing. Different cultures have different conventions. Some of them use the same symbol you do.

As for the latter argument.. "dollars one hundred" - yes, this is the wrong order indeed.

Similar to "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue" vs "Pennsylvania Avenue 1600".

Some cultures get it wrong.

Has anyone in the US ordered PCBs from PCBWay, JLCPCB, etc, since the tariffs went into effect?
Curious how that's going to work...

I ordered some small PCB's from JLCPCB last Friday. They are on their way now. I ordered about the same a month ago. The price for the order went from $2.00 to $5.00 with $17-$22 for shipping. However the tariff changed between my payment and shipping. However the difference would not buy me coffee here.

So do corporations. Fleabay repeatedly indicates it thinks addresses are wrong when they aren't, and suggests mutating them to something like street, city, town, postcode. Who knows where that might be standard. Why? My only guess is that if something goes wrong they can deflect responsibility by claiming "you ignored our suggestion".

Let's say: since the de minimis exemption went away, theoretically requiring even the "old" tariffs to be applied.

Email from Fedex:

Quote
Updates on the regulatory changes in the United States

Effective May 14, 2025 at 12:01 a.m. EDT,
The reciprocal tariffs applicable to products with country of origin from China, Hong Kong SAR China, and Macau SAR China will decrease from 125% to 10% for 90 days.
Other tariffs remain effective including the following. Tariff stacking continues and the total duty rates will depend on products:
IEEPA fentanyl tariff (20%)
Base tariff
Section 232 tariff
Section 301 tariff
Any other tariff that may apply to specific products
Duty-free de minimis treatment for products with country of origin from China and Hong Kong SAR China is NOT reinstated.
China's countermeasure tariffs on products with country of origin of the United States will decrease from 125% to 34%. Of the 34%, 24% will be suspended for 90 days, i.e. only 10% will remain in effect in the meantime. It will take effect before May 14, 2025 (exact timing to be confirmed). Other non-tariff countermeasures are expected to be suspended or cancelled subject to the official announcement from the authority.

You are right, no impact on heavenly bodies, they keep circling around Mar-a-Lago.

Seriously, he may be transforming the Middle East, time will tell.

I'm in duty and tariff hell and just thought I'd tell a brief tale.

Bought a nice Keysight scope from a Canadian ebay seller.  Got the scope last week, very nice and clean.  Got the Fedex International Ground invoice this week .

Almost $700 in DUTY for a $2300 item  :palm:  :palm:  :palm:  The seller insists (and is believable) that he entered the customs info into Ebay's assistant app of some sort (not the GSP program).  He selected Malaysia and believes that Ebay's "app" generated CA for the country of manufacture on the Commercial Invoice and maybe elsewhere.

So far, two wasted days trying to fix this.  Filed dispute with Fedex, who has passed it along to US Customs.  Customs says 90 to 180 fricking days to resolve.  Fortunately, invoice is on hold while in dispute.  Just called US Customs to verify that this sounds right and they have a 1.5 hour hold time unless it involves reporting illegals, porn, drugs, international hardship, etc.

I will never, never, never, ever buy from an international seller again.

And we haven't even made it to the tariff yet, which should be ONLY 10% but God only knows if they use the right number as it has bounced around in April.

Anyone else been here, done this?

For smaller orders you have the de minimis, for most countries.

@EE-digger you may want to check if the tariff ID was the right one specified.

That's a good point and the HS code(s) became 3 in number and somewhat obfuscated.  They had verbage about reciprocity with them.  I hope that if CA goes away as the country of origin, we jump to the tariff section  :)
