Most popular chip for Hi-Speed USB is FX2LP. 8051 is inside of it. Any programmer was forced to use it, prefer or not. As a result, 8051 is well-known and easy to program. Example:

my favorite [...] lubricant

What is your favorite lubricant, David? I assume we're talking about some grease of sorts, not just a thinner agent, such as an oil.

I have had excellent results with MG Chemicals 801B - Super Contact Cleaner With PPE (Polyphenyl Ether).  Its solvent is naphtha which is plastic safe, and the PPE oil does not creep across surfaces unlike silicone oils minimizing contamination.

Variable wavelength these days is AOTF, or PCAOM.  You can get 8-10 perfectly overlapping color channels. I prefer models by AA Electro-optique, or Gouch and Housego.   Gelbert, common sense genius that he is, was beat by Ted Maiman on the color diffraction with AOM.

For. Gilbert's version you need polarized light.

As you can get a metal halide short arc car headlight and ballast for next to nothing, that sure beats the cost of a lab grade Xenon Arc.

The PCAOM on my bench tunes in 4 nm steps, used with a mixed-gas ion laser for color display.  I'm told AOTF can get close to 1 nm.

It's a great idea, thanks for mentioning it.

Repair / Can anyone help identify this ON semi IC?
« Last post by Keg on Today at 12:52:36 am »
I've been trying to find a datasheet on this IC.  It's ON semi, 14 pin, smd. Marked 14011BG & PNYC52.  Can't find it.  Anyone else?

Thanks, Ken

Buy/Sell/Wanted / Re: Element 14 Australia Fire Sale

I know it’s AU/NZ only, but still: How did you manage to find these discounts?
They don’t have a function on their website to search for all SALE articles, do they?

No, but if you go to the NZ or Aussie version of Newark, you'll see a huge sale banner on the page...
I guess if such a sale comes to the EU/Germany you would see something similar:

Repair / Re: Blaupunkt CR-4096 AM/FM/Cassette playing speed too fast
« Last post by floobydust on Today at 12:36:29 am »
Some cassette motors have a built-in electronic speed regulator. Some are external power transistor/board and extra wires for the tach.
Look very very closely at the back of the motor, in the holes and see what they are about. Sometimes there is an adjustment trimpot.
With the older centrifugal weights speed regulators contacts can get stuck. I'm suspicious there are no capacitors outside this motor.

You can measure the motor speed or listen if it changes with a change of say 12-14V power, that will tell you if it is just regulating fast, or no regulation at all. I have taken motors apart and done surgery when desperate.

I am finding those grey electrolytic capacitors are drying up as well, so make sure the motor has clean power.

I don't think the person itself is a bot - no bot can talk like this exactly. It sounds too "human" in some of the phrasing. But there's a high probability this is a real person working at testing & training AI.

Repair / Fixing laptop screen vertical line by amending its EDP
« Last post by marhuum on Today at 12:35:40 am »
Has one here really gone through fixing laptop screen vertical line(s) by repairing/replacing its Embedded DisplayPort (EDP) cable, so recounts and shares the complete steps of the process ?

As most, if not all, believe the laptop screen vertical line(s) caused by defective Embedded DisplayPort (EDP) cable which slipped and passed through either laptop screen hinge but post here is asking help to elaborate definitively the useful, real knowledge of repairing in the most complete, correct way, esp. can decide/determine whether the cable can still be fixed or must be replaced

So sincerely help out

General Technical Chat / Re: Silicone vs. PVC measuring leads
« Last post by shabaz on Today at 12:27:14 am »
For red and black wire for thin test leads, I've been using very flexible 24 AWG wire from CPC/Farnell. It's very low cost (£0.99 for 5m lengths) and 'feels' great in use, too. It has 133 strands. However, it is PVC, so it has limitations like temperature range.

In terms of multi-color, I was looking for reasonable-priced flexible wire not for multimeter probes, but for logic probe type applications, and noticed an online store called BNTECHGO, and placed an order for 26 AWG wire (they offer other sizes too). It seems to be silicone (doesn't melt when I apply a 330 deg C soldering iron to the insulation). In terms of stranding, the 26 AWG cable had 30 strands of 0.06 mm tinned wire.

They sell reels at what seems a fair price for low-volume use, but they also sell packs of 10 colors in 5 ft (1.5 m) lengths. Unfortunately, gray is missing from the 10-pack, so if the full color code is needed, a reel of gray would also need to be purchased.

On the negative side, the BNTECHGO wire is initially really stinky. After a month, the smell reduces, but it's not gone (but now, it only smells if you put your nose within a few inches of it). Maybe I'm being too picky, but it's still irritating enough that I'd prefer an odorless wire supplier, even if it costs slightly more, and I will check the normal distributors at some point.

Many DSOs don't have the option of moving the time-reference-point, certain Siglent models being the exception although I don't fully understand how the function operates.

I can't think of a single DSO that doesn't have this capability one way or another.  It is a combination of horizontal position plus trigger delay in those cases where you can move it completely off the screen.  Whether the visible position of the trigger point changes with the timebase is a configurable option in some cases or a fixed feature in others.
