Harris was appointed, not democratically selected, as the representative for the Democrats.

Remember the UK's experience with Liz Truss. She was voted for by the members of the Conservative party (not just MPs and peers), and was so disastrous that she lasted only 50 days before being ejected. In that time she crashed the UK economy with her libertarian economic policies and inept management. Famously, her premiership was outlasted by a head of lettuce.

Nowadays nobody in the UK has any time for her whatsoever, but she appears to be trying to peddle her credentials in the US. I expect some people will listen to her because they like her accent.

So, it is best if the candidates are chosen by colleagues who know how they work/fail, not by the party rabble.

You do realize the implications of what you're saying, right?  The people shouldn't be trusted to select their leaders. That Harris being chosen by her peers was best, and she turned out so awful that people didn't vote for Trump; they voted against Harris.

There's a political system often used to demonize the current US administration, which selects its leaders from within its ranks rather than from the people, at least in the primary historical examples I'm aware of.

I'm glad the US kicked the British to the curb and selected our methods myself. It's a 250-year-old experiment that's still going.

Wrong. Read again, more carefully this time.

Skilled people should select plausible alternatives, and then unskilled people can choose between the alternatives.
I read it, in much disbelief, I must say. I can't believe anyone in this day and age would suggest an elitist system of "Qualified people make the decisions."

I can only assume that I am wrong because you say so. You didn't provide any reasonable explanation, any examples, or show any willingness to counter my argument.

You're the one blindly believing the likes of Communist National News. i'm not saying it's definitely false. I have my doubts about the accuracy of websites which contain TDS.

Wow Zero... every single remotely political topic you do the same thing... claim certain replies are "off topic" (which they are) whilst simulataniously perpetuating the off-topic stuff trying to get the very last word in.. and pepper that with phrases only used by right-wing sources (like above, and "TDS") all whilst claiming the "other side" is baised.  Its one thing to have a stance/opinion on matters.. but I mean.. surely you see the hypocrisy?

No, he doesn't. Sometimes he sort of moves towards that understanding, but then gears clash and his brain resets.

Simply adding "of course I have my own biases" every so often doesn't excuse you from doing the very thing you seem to be complaining about about.

Of course it doesn't.

Traditionally political and religious extremist rabble rousers frequently make statements damning others for things they do themselves. A classic one is adultery, but there are many others.
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.

Oh, the usual left-leaning sites and Ministry of Truth, eh "fact checkers", so a grain of salt is warranted. . .

We realise you would find a way to distrust such sources if they told you that 1+2*3=9, and that only Faux News and Pravda Social "say it as it is".

You're the one blindly believing the likes of Communist National News. i'm not saying it's definitely false. I have my doubts about the accuracy of websites which contain TDS.

So you think I might believe communist propaganda?! You really are clueless about what you don't know.

How many times did you go through the Iron Curtain into communist countries? I have personal experience of what was on the other side.

How many friends do you have whose job was to travel around Soviet bloc countries to determine how well BBC radio broadcasts were being received?

How many friends do you have who got divorced in order that the husband could crawl under the Iron Curtain, then remarried when reunited with his wife and children?

Numbers please.

In case it isn't bleeding obvious to you, I have been recognising propaganda a.k.a. "alternative facts" for a long time. Hence it isn't difficult for me to see through T'rump's bluster, bullying, and behaving like a mobster.
CNN = Communist National News. You like to use silly names for Fox News. Don't get annoyed when others do the same. All I say is I'm sceptical of both.

Either way, I agree with Trump for avoiding the draft, if that was really the case. There were plenty of other reasons for opposing the Vietnam war. The US wasn't being attacked. It was interference in another country's affairs. I would have done anything to avoid getting roped into it, had I lived in the US back then, just as I wouldn't go and fight in some war which has nothing to do with us, on the say so of our current idiotic government. He clearly isn't a coward. If they were the case, then he would have dropped any idea of running for president, after the first assassination attempt.

I find it odd how, back then, most left-wingers would have applauded Trump, only to change their tune since.

The main reason such people dodged the draft was to avoid being killed. I can't say I blame them, but that doesn't make it praiseworthy.
You were arenoutn back then. Don't you remember the protests? I saw plenty of footage and have read about them. It's now history.

So what? Your point is irrelevant.

You think history is irrelevant? Those that forget the past are condemned to repeat it.
No I don't. That's the whole bloody point. I wouldn't go into a Vietnam style war for my country, but if WWII happened again, I would, because it would be a different matter entirely.

To conflate running for cover in a firefight, with running for president is stupid and obscene. You insult people who put their lives on the line for others.
Rubbish. There's a difference between fighting to defend your country and some proxy war. .

Strawman argument.

If that's your considered response to my statement, then you have comprehension problems. While your statement is valid in isolation, it has no relationship to what I wrote.

Or maybe you do think being defeated in an election is the same as being defeated in close quarters combat! You insult people who have been in such battles.
Alright. I've noticed that pattern, in light of a rebuttal say the magic word: strawman aka bollocks.

You're the one blindly believing the likes of Communist National News. i'm not saying it's definitely false. I have my doubts about the accuracy of websites which contain TDS.

Simply adding "of course I have my own biases" every so often doesn't excuse you from doing the very thing you seem to be complaining about about.  If you really were concerned about staying on topic, your last ~5 posts here wouldn't exist.  I 've seen this many times... you keep pouring fuel on the fire, Dave/Admin threatens to lock the topic and you immediately reply with something to get the last word in, then..."Ok I'm sorry, I won't post about it any more".  Its like you want to feel like you've somehow won an argument just as the topic gets locked.  This forum is filled with this crap, but its a very small minority that does it - just look at the past 40 posts.. there's plenty about Tarriffs and their effects, how many of yours have been about that?
I admit I'm guilty of not staying on topic, but the same accusation could be made at many people here? Why single me out?

Regarding right wing, well maybe it's just I'm right of your opinions? Everything is relative. If you read my posts you'll find I've made many criticisms of Trump along with tariffs. I use the term TDS because it genuinely applies to some: big orange man, T'rump, fascist etc. are all clear signs of TDS. I don't like Trump. He's an a-hole just like any other politician. The difference is he doesn't bother hiding it. I might occasionally call a politician a name like that, but I don't fill my posts with it. I prefer to attack their actions, rather than resorting to childish insults.

Faux News is appropriate according to their own lawyers arguments in court! ...

Precisely what? You know what they call the doctor who barely passed medical school and the lawyer who barely passed the bar on the 20th attempt?
You attribute blindness, but are blind to your own. On the contrary, I want to select my treatment. Thank you very much. You keep trusting your elite peeps.

And as far as voting. I have no clue as who to vote for. I don't trust any of the parties in Westminster. They're all corrupt in some way. It will just pick the least worst one or maybe I'll spoil my paper.

I meant Communist as in far-left. CNN are a lefty news organisation, just like Fox are right-wing.

And CNN have had their fair share of controversies. Yes I know it's Wikipedia, but I consider them to be slightly left-leaning, which is reflective of academia.

Care to compare and contrast that to another very well known case of journalistic mendacity and outright fabrication?
Judith Miller's mostly made-up reporting in the run-up to the Iraq War (I), reportage that actually helped grease the wheels for that illegal, counterproductive, destructive, needless, etc., etc., attack.

This in the vaunted, oh-so-above-it-all New York Times.
Which never suffered a single lawsuit, demand for clarification or withdrawal of Pulitzer Prizes.
Not one single fucking retraction was ever printed about this egregious case of simply lying.
And her career didn't even suffer!

Which goes to show that "journalists" (i.e., stenographers to power) who do the bidding of the "deep state"/"blob"/whatever you want to call the actual functioning administration of the U.S. empire's actual, not stated, policies are always protected from any such consequences.

Or maybe you think a lawyer should determine that your prostate cancer (the most common male camcer) needs to be treated, and how. Personally I'd prefer an oncologist to offer me suitable alternatives and let me choose.

Thank you so much for outing yourself so eloquently. You are 100% correct, I believe. I will not, and I will never wish to be, your equal.

I was curious about how much your statements indicate your views and their distinct alignment with Trump's. I haven't noted, are you a huge MAGA/Trump fan?

Whoa. Wait just a minute there.
The quote attribution for this post is all screwed up (you seem to be asking yourself if you're a MAGA/Trump fan).

If you're asking that of @tggzzz, that's a silly question. (Unless you're trying to be ironic.)

So what's the actual intent of your post there?

I'm not sure if the quotes imply a reply, but rather provide context. Without quoting, I could have modified my previous post, but the new one was another thought, and I believed it was worthy of its own post, but in the same context.

Trump has an elitist view, and that's pretty well documented. I can provide some documentation if that's what's missing. @tggzzz just made statements that I would wholeheartedly believe came from Trump's mouth if someone had said that were the case.

Precisely!

Now, would you be content if a lawyer chose your prostate cancer treatment? Because that's the consequence of being rabidly anti elitist.

Precisely what? You know what they call the doctor who barely passed medical school and the lawyer who barely passed the bar on the 20th attempt?
You attribute blindness, but are blind to your own. On the contrary, I want to select my treatment. Thank you very much. You keep trusting your elite peeps.
Jones was elite, drink the kool-aid.

Precisely: we are not equals and never will be equals - even though lazy populist statements and HR-droids frequently state that everybody is equal.

You appear to be being perverse in deliberately ignoring what I wrote. Either that or your comprehension skills need honing. Re-read the highlighted statement.

There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.

I do ignore large chunks of information. What you have proposed makes people dumber, and they should ignore it.
So, yes, you caught me. I'm guilty and will remain guilty of ignoring drivel like that.

There's nothing wrong with Arts grads or MBAs dictating software development. The biggest problem in software is engineers who believe they know best.
Software people write code, which makes them coders, not experts on what the outcomes of the development process should be. If we follow your illogical flow, then AI should decide legal decisions (AI has passed the bar exam), AI should give you your treatment plan (It is more accurate in many cases than physicians).
If you have ever watched the movie Idiocracy, that's precisely what you are trying to encourage.

I'll give you a brief education. Humans are at least 99.9% identical. Claiming that some bit of paper, school, or anything makes one superior to the other is dumb.
Elitism is viewed negatively because it can undermine social equality, stifle innovation, reduce social mobility, and erode public trust. It is the belief that a small group of people, the elite, should have disproportionate power and influence because they are inherently superior in intellect, talent, or wealth. This attitude clashes with democratic and egalitarian values, which assert that all individuals have equal worth.

Obviously, you and Donald Trump agree, so I'm surprised by some of the other posts on here that claim otherwise.

Elitism prevents true meritocracy. Trust is earned through merit. You should investigate these two concepts in more depth and understand the differences.

This is certainly an interesting turn, though there's a long way to go in the courts to finalize anything. It will be interesting to see how it all settles out.

With two contributors posting the majority of words over the last two pages, yet nothing about tariffs, and venturing deeply into politics….

Should this thread be locked permanently? Or  the very least temporarily closed for a cool-down?

In tariff news though, the appeals court has ruled Trump’s global tariffs as unlawful. Expect it to be taken to the Supreme Court.

Quick check on inflation:

1) Official inflation is slowly creeping up (PCE 2.9% vs. 2.8% in July) as tariffs start rippling through the economy.
2) Real inflation feels much higher. Beef is up 40%. Today I paid $35 per pound for USDA Prime strip steak from Nebraska, compared to $25 per pound in early spring. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are up 25-50% from last year.
3) Egg prices remain about double what they were before the avian disease outbreak.
4) Petrol prices have been stable for 1.5 years, holding steady at $2.99 per gallon where I fill up.
5) Gold is at an ATH, which suggests the real value of the dollar is at a historic low.

I like our president for many things, but he is economically illiterate.

I've posted two links about tariffs on this page alone.  One about this latest court ruling. One was about the impacts of the tariffs on India.

To be clear, tariffs can't be discussed without politics. The one is the tool of the other.
